Fantastic fan-made video of the history of the Wii. From the very first tidbits of information on the “Revolution”, to the wild speculation, to now. Very cool.

The Revolution goes Wii!

May 2nd, 2006

Jaws of every Nintendo fanboy out there dropped when Nintendo announced that the name “Nintendo Revolution” was no more and their next-generation console would be called the Nintendo Wii. My jaw was right there on the floor with you, but over the last several days I’ve actually come around on the concept a little bit.

Just in case you forgot, here’s the announcement animation:

The Wii logo looks good and somehow fits Nintendo and the new system well. The two i’s really do remind you of the system’s innovative new nunchuck controllers. It’s short, it’s sleek, and modern. It’s obviously borrowing a great deal from Apple’s style, which is never a bad thing. The logo is cool.

The name of course is the problem. Nintendo’s Perrin Kaplan says the name is unusual and will grow on us like Google and Amazon have. Unfortunately, as I’m sure you’re aware of, you never had to excuse yourself from class to take a “google.” And it wouldn’t sound creepy when you told people you were going home to play with your “napster.” The name is making waves not because it sounds different, but because it’s sounds dirty. Particularly to the younger demographic that Nintendo systems and games have always been so strong with.

Will the name grow on me? Maybe. Will I ever stop giggling when I hear someone say it? Doubtful.
