Japanese hardware sales, Nov. 17 - Nov. 23: Unwise purchases edition
November 30th, 2008
Filed under: Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business
We rarely ask any favors of you, dear readers, so we’re hoping you’ll oblige the following humble request. You see, in the midst of Black Friday’s acquisitional frenzy, we may have gotten a tad carried away, making purchases beyond our fiscal means — and far beyond our typical practicality. What dark forces would drive us to purchase a set of nickel-plated egg beaters, a lifetime supply of Poligrip denture paste, three Razor scooters and the complete Kenny Loggins discography, you may ask? Our damnable, hard-wired frugality.
Our savings accounts now liquidated, we currently find ourselves in a residential crisis. Had we only possessed the foresight to place importance on rent payments rather than kitchen utensils and smooth, smooth music, we may have avoided this predicament. That’s where you guys come in — we either […]

Amazon’s 2008 Cyber Monday deals
November 30th, 2008
Filed under: Nintendo DS, PC, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Peripherals, Business
In case your wallet isn’t hurting enough from this weekend (or you simply decided to take the frugal route with Black Friday shopping), Amazon has unveiled their Cyber Monday deals, which starts tomorrow at 3:00AM ET. While no way as exhaustive as its weekend specials (which, like the new deals, last until Tuesday, December 2 at 2:59AM ET), there are a few steep discounts worth noting. Fable 2 and LittleBigPlanet are $40 each, and Spore is being offered for only $20.
We’ve posted the full list after the break. Be sure to also keep an eye on GameStop, who has its own specials starting at midnight ET tonight.

Ken Moore’s Wiimote theremin hack explores the final frontier
November 30th, 2008
Are you worried that your Wii remote’s innards are atrophying during the recent dry spell of Wii titles aimed at the discerning “core gamer”? We recently stumbled upon a great way of giving your one-handed peripheral a nice workout — using it to make music. Oh, no — not like that. We’re speaking of the latest Wiimote homebrew, from the musical mind of Ken Moore, which effectively turns your controller into a theremin. You know, the only musical instrument that you play without touching. What, your parents didn’t make you take theremin lessons in grade school?
We’ve got a history lesson and tech demo posted after the break, as well as Mr. Moore’s attempt at the opening theme for Star Trek. The original theme, that is — not that wretched “Faith of the Heart” cover.

Excite Truck dev working on top-secret Wii title
November 29th, 2008
Excite Truck wasn’t the most well-received or widely-purchased launch title for the Wii, though there was something charming about sending gargantuan automobiles bounding across rough terrain. However, we haven’t heard much from developer Monster Games since the title’s 2006 release. A recent article in a Minnesota-based blog titled Locally Grown shed some light on the company’s under the radar status — they’ve apparently been working on a top-secret Wii title for the past two years.
The title, which many speculate to be another racing game (as it appears to be the developer’s bread-and-butter genre), is nearly complete. However, don’t expect any information about the project to leak any time soon — the article explains that the cautious development team is so protective of the new title that they dim their computer screens when the bottled water delivery person visits. It’s a ritual they apparently developed after being forced […]

Zelda director won’t quit until he surpasses Ocarina of Time
November 29th, 2008
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time turned 10 years old last Friday. Remarkably, even after a decade of technological advances and narrative achievements in gaming, it remains atop Gamerankings’ list as the highest rated game of all time. However, if Eiji Aonuma (director of Ocarina and every subsequent Zelda title) has his way, the Hylian N64 classic will be dethroned in his lifetime.
In a recent interview with Nintendo Power, Aonuma expressed his lofty career goals — he plans to stick with the Zelda series until he creates a title that surpasses Ocarina of Time. This is fantastic news, as Aonuma’s continued involvement with the series is likely the only reason we’ve yet to see a spin-off title featuring a gun-toting Dark Link.

Stay at home: Amazon’s incredible Black Friday deals (and Newegg, too)
November 27th, 2008
Filed under: Nintendo DS, Mac, PC, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Peripherals, Business
Knowing that we would prefer not to get off the couch (especially with temperatures dropping as they are wont to do this time of year), Newegg and Amazon are celebrating Black Friday with their own super deals. Newegg’s deals (effective now through Sunday, November 30) are predominantly PC-centric, but console gamers can still enjoy $20 off Metal Gear Solid 4.
Amazon’s deals, however, are absolutely irresistible. Far Cry 2 for $38? Dead Space for $30? Left 4 Dead PC for $20?! There are plenty more; we suggest you get cozy and have your credit card handy tonight.
Full list after the break. Amazon’s deals begin Friday, November 28 at 3:00AM ET. The Friday Only deals (designated as such) end 2:59AM ET Saturday morning (or until supplies run out, natch), while […]

Holidaze 2008: Live in the past, it’s cheaper
November 27th, 2008
Filed under: Mac, PC, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360
Bad news, everybody: 2008 is the new 2007. Those of us lucky enough to have survived last year’s unyielding flood of exquisite games expected the new holiday to provide some respite — perhaps an influx of blessedly mediocre games — but alas, our wallets are once again tugged in every $60 direction.
But what’s worse? The deafening din of desirable games, or that irresistible impulse to play and master every adventure the very second it becomes available? Provided you can defeat the latter reflex, we have a simple suggestion: Live in the past. It’s cheaper!
We’ve dredged up our decisive, if ever-so-slightly controversial list of the ten best games of Oh Seven, hoping you’ll find a fantastic experience you mistakenly overlooked. You’ll find that the passage of time has taken a pleasing toll on the recommended price of […]

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
What we said then: “Perhaps the most surprising thing about the game is how few actual revolutionary concepts are contained within. It selects existing game design tools, hones them to practical perfection and creates what is, in our opinion, the military shooter against which all others must be judged.”
What we say now: “An essential ‘tunnel of fun’ shooter with a rewarding multiplayer component. If you find yourself disappointed by this year’s Call of Duty: World at War, it’s probably this game’s fault.”
Current retail price: $39.99 (Game of the Year edition)

Meta-Metareview: The best reviewed games of 2008
November 27th, 2008
Filed under: Nintendo DS, Mac, PC, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Metareviews
With almost all of the big games of ‘08 now on shelves (we’re looking at you, Prince of Persia) or available via Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, you’re left with a lot of choices. Some of them you’ve already bought; others you’ve been on the fence over; others you didn’t realize were “supposed to be” any good - but, if you’re anything like us, you don’t want to miss any of the must-plays this year has to offer.
Enter our “meta-metareview,” a list of every game released this year that’s scored above 85% on average from reviewers around the world. You won’t be surprised by the games that made the list; you will be surprised that some of your (and our) favorites didn’t make it. Check out the full list after […]

Wii Speak Channel not so limited; ‘replacement’ downloads possible
November 26th, 2008
Despite telling MTV earlier this month that the Wii Speak Channel - bundled with the Wii Speak peripheral in the form of a “Download Ticket” - would not be made available through any other means, it appears the Big N has reconsidered that stance, clarifying its new, more flexible policy with GameSpot.
“Any consumer who may have misplaced their Wii Download Ticket number for the Wii Speak Channel or require a new number following a Wii exchange may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a replacement Wii Download Ticket number.”
We’re sympathetic with the industry’s desire to use things like one-off downloadable content to encourage new game sales, but applying that logic to a hardware peripheral always struck us as particularly short-sighted.
But now, with that concern out of the way, we’re writing directly to you future thrift store shoppers: Put down that ironic t-shirt […]
